Frequently asked questions

What is Micro-Needling?

Micro-needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for treating the appearance of fine lines, acne scars and improving the skins overall appearance. During this procedure, the microneedling pen is used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to boost collagen and elastin production.  Micro-needling also creates superficial micro-channels through which topical gels, creams and serums can be penetrated deeper into the dermis to help improve the appearance of the skin.

How is the procedure done?

First, your skin care professional will apply topical cream to numb the skin and ensure a comfortable and pain-free as possible treatment. Then, a thin layer of hyaluronic acid is applied and the pen is gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction or circles until the entire treatment area has been covered.

How long does the procedure take?

Numbing cream is first applied for 30 minutes, then procedure takes 30-45 minutes depending on the size of the area treated. Expect around 60 - 90 minutes total

Is there any downtime?

Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the microneedling pen depth setting used and the number of overlapping passes your skin care professional performs. On average, patients display slight redness from 2 to 4 days. Although, many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours. It is recommended to not wear makeup for at least 24 hour after treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Some patients only require a single treatment once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 3-4 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6-week intervals for optimal results.

How long will it take for me to see results?

Most patients see results after the first microneedling treatment. Individual results vary depending on individual skin health. It is most common to begin to see true changes or positive results as soon as 1-2 weeks after the first treatment. Many patients comment on positive changes in even less time, often within just a few days.

Will the procedure hurt?

Prior to your treatment, your skincare professional will apply a topical numbing agent. Most people say they feel almost nothing when a numbing cream is used. Immediately after treatment, your skin will feel warm and tight. It will also be pink or mildly red as if you were out in the sun for a while. The redness and warm feeling should subside after a few hours. But for some patients, it can take a day or two for these side effects to go away completely. For others, it may take up to a week before the redness has completely subsided. If this happens, you may use a cooling face mask to reduce the redness, heat, and inflammation.

What is the aftercare?

Use a gentle cleanser and warm water to cleanse the face for 72 hours post-treatment, and gently dry the treated skin. Always make sure your hands are clean when touching the treated area. Following your treatment, your skin may feel drier than normal. Hyaluronic Acid is an ideal ingredient you can use to hydrate and restore the skin back to perfect balance. We recommend you do not apply makeup for 24 hours after the procedure. In addition, do not apply any makeup with a makeup brush, especially if the brush is not clean. Immediately after the procedure, your skin professional will apply a broad spectrum UVA/UVB, SPF 25 or greater sunscreen to your skin. Keep in mind that you should continue to use a sunscreen everyday—not only the days following your procedure—as part of your skincare routine to protect your skin from sun damage and premature aging. To ensure the proper healing environment, do NOT use any Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Retinol (Vitamin A), Vitamin C (in a low pH formula) scrubs or anything perceived as “active” skincare for one week post treatment. Do not use any powered cleansing brushes like Clarisonic for one week post treatment. Avoid intentional and direct sunlight or tanning beds for 1-2 weeks. Do not go swimming for at least 72 hours post-treatment. Do not exercise or participate in strenuous activity for the first 24 hours post-treatment. Sweating and gym environments in general are filled with bacteria, which may cause adverse reactions in your skin.
